Workshop on Gothic Handwriting

Learn to read Gothic handwriting from the first half of the 19th century in this practical workshop. You will gain knowledge of Copenhagen City Archives' custom-developed Gothic Picture Book and other tools that help you master this distinctive script style.

During the workshop, you will practice transcribing entries from burial registers together with other participants. This gives you hands-on experience in applying the tools in practice – both for understanding the handwriting and for working with Kildetasteren, the Archives' online platform for volunteer transcription of archival material.

The workshop requires no prerequisites – just an interest in learning something new and working with genealogy sources. Coffee, tea, and cake will be served during the event.

Purpose: To strengthen your skills in Gothic handwriting so you feel ready to contribute to Kildetasteren by transcribing burial registers from Assistens Churchyard and making archival material searchable for genealogists, historians, and other interested parties.
