The Yayas were Sheffield's iconic forgotten darlings from the early 1980s — a band that, despite never releasing an album, became the centrepiece of the city's thriving music scene in 1982-83. The circles surrounding the group were unique: mods and scooter enthusiasts dressed as if they'd arrived by time machine from 1965 mingled with post-punk avant-garde figures, including early members of Pulp and members of Artery. Even Jarvis Cocker played a warm-up set for The Yayas in his avant-garde duo Fish & Breadcake.
Now, 40 years after their last concert in Sheffield, The Yayas have agreed to reassemble — first with a reunion show in Sheffield in November, and before that an intimate rehearsal concert in Bryggekælderen's cosy basement. Here, Copenhagen friends and other interested listeners will have the chance to see a legendary band rediscovering its energy and nerve.
