Turn your attention to overlooked literary classics from Africa. Moussa Mchangama and Ingrid Baraka Magnifique explore in conversation how African female authors over several decades have written about freedom, desire, motherhood, colonialism and belonging – and why these works have rarely reached a broad audience in Europe.
Encounter major works such as Mariama Bâ's So Long a Letter (Senegal, 1979), Buchi Emecheta's The Joys of Motherhood (Nigeria, 1979), Ama Ata Aidoo's Our Sister Killjoy (Ghana, 1977) and Tsitsi Dangaremba's Nervous Conditions (Zimbabwe, 1988) – works that address women's struggle for education, freedom and identity, as well as their attempts to create their own lives in the world. The conversation traces lines to the present day and shows how these classics form essential building blocks for contemporary feminist literature from Africa – continued by authors such as Imbolo Mbue, Akwaeke Emezi and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
