Lars-Hussein shares his personal story as an adopted child from Rwanda to Denmark. The speaker was adopted in 1967 by Danish missionaries and took a journey from south to north – one he did not choose himself.
Adoption has undergone significant changes over the decades. While it previously occurred locally, globalization led to mass adoptions across borders. Over 22,000 children have been adopted to Denmark from abroad. Adult adoptees have become important voices in adoption debates and brought greater attention to the topic.
In the lecture, Lars-Hussein shares both his inner and outer journey – from childhood in Rwanda through his teenage years to his adult life in Denmark. A story about being adopted, the journeys one did not choose, and how conversations about adoption have long been taboo in Denmark.
