Niels Jensen takes the audience on a journey through the history of Amagerbanen, one of Denmark's most distinctive railways. When the line opened in 1907, it was primarily to serve the numerous factories along Amager's east coast – passenger traffic was more of a secondary benefit. The local smallholders especially valued the connection, but as the railway daily transported latrines from Copenhagen to the island, it earned playful nicknames among children such as "the latrine train".
The lecture draws on an extensive photographic archive from Amagerbanen's operations, historical accounts and archival research. Jensen himself has a background as an intelligence officer in the Danish military and has spent over 40 years as a newspaper journalist and author.
The History Club on Amager is a joint initiative between Kvarterhuset, Islands Brygge Library and Sundby Library. Although it is called a club, all interested parties are welcome – the events are open to the public.
